Masud and four others, including the chief executive of Bangladesh's private ATN television news channel, Mishuk Munier, died on the spot when the minibus carrying them collided head-on with a bus at Ghior, police said.
Masud's US-born wife and producer, Catherine Masud, and a noted Bangladeshi painter, Dhali al Mamun, and his wife were seriously injured in the accident, local police chief Mohammad Raisuddin told AFP by telephone.
"They had come to Ghior to select a shooting spot for Masud's next film. They had made their choice and were returning home when the accident occurred," he said.
Ghior, a scenic district close to the Ganges River, lies around 70 kilometres (40 miles) west of Dhaka.
Masud shot to fame after his 2002 film "Matir Moina" (The Clay Bird) won several prizes, including an International Federation of Film Critics award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Police said Masud was believed to be around 50 years of age.
Road accidents are common in Bangladesh and kill thousands of people each year. Shoddy highways, poorly maintained vehicles and drivers' disregard for road safety are blamed for most fatalities.

Nobody can avoid the fact of death, but the activities must evaluate what was he!
This is a loss not only for Bangladesh but for the entire sub-continent. As I am a member of Ritwiz Film Society, Karimganj, Assam,India, I had the the opportunity to see Matir Moina. It was brilliant. We are to planning to hold a film show in the memory of Tarek Masud on 2nd Week of September 2011 among our members.
this is our another loss,,,,,which never b replaceable......coz this kind of wealth is rear in our present nation......may Allah give him peace....through heaven.....
Through "Muktir Gan" after 71" Bangladeshi Generation Has been known what the sacrifice was for our liberation, the unity and empathy had among the Bangladeshi people, the devotion and commitment to free a nation from all kinds of odds, which we have forgotten by the fake political activity only rely s on personal image and looking for the endless demand for making assets, without any morality and patriotism running for the personal career, shameless ignorance on culture, heritage, history and nature.
I like Tareq Masud & Kathrin Masud. I also Like Matir Moina & Muktir Misil. Wish May Allah Long Live Kathrin Masud And Her Son.
I don't know how to express my condolence for Tareq Masud, Munir vai and others who have left us by an car crash, we all know it is an early journey for such persons who had devoted their everything for the country and upholding its glory to the world. However we must accept the fate but I am strongly expressing my grievances to the rack less drivers and the shameless authorities who have given licenses to those killers and again attempting to provide more license to kill more. May Allah bless their passed souls and rest them in haven and also give early recovery of Katherine and courage to complete Maud Vai's un finished dream.
i never thought of losing such personalities.a small country lost 2 its britest man..we always remember u....akash
very very unfortunate and deeply shocking. Bangladesh definitely has lost one of his brightest son of the soil. Hoping for early and complete recovery of katrina. Best wishes for their son.
A artist never die..........
Its not only him..its also "us" its we....few days back 44 kids died in road accident and uncountable general people. The victim can be U, I Or Mr.Masud or anyone but the question is how long our Honorable ministers and politicians will close their eyes and will do nothing??
Shocking, unexceptable, unexpected. We have lost two assets of our country. We don't want to loose anyone else from any family by road accident. We don't want to loose Catherine Masud. May the Allmighty Allah recover her soon for their son. Allah will definitely help their family to wake up again. And our govt..... should be aware of to protect the country peoples' life from the terrific road accidents.
In all incidents of road accidents my heart bleeds. I am a mother and a grandma. Tarek Masud is a few years senior to my son in age. Now I feel that I have lost my son forever. I will never see his pleasing smiling face anymore. May Allah grant him eternal peace in zannat with other victims of the accident. I also pray for quick recovery of his wife Catharine with others. Sometimes I think there should be a Government school to teach the drivers solid technical lessons on driving and also on morality by educated instructors. Drivers specially the bus drivers are seldom caught. Always they flies before people can catch them. Because they know the way. With perfect training this can be stopped. Some times drug addicts from slum area learn driving from another drug addict and they look for a job on driving or at least for a helper. If he gets a chance for low salary there Is the havoc. Each driver should learn morality and responsibility from the school. They should get certificates from the school. Without certificate they should not get a job. I think if the number of accidents diminishes or come to a stop all the departed souls including Tarek Masud and Mishuk Munir will be in peace.
whole nation really very socked to died tareq masud by the tragic road crush.we have lost a brilliant film maker & patriotic people.we hope his wife Catherina masud get well soon & his son (nishad) will be stay well.
This has been a natonal tragedy for us.Bangladesh is a such a country where even a Rickshaw puller are allowed to drive buses and trucks and this is costing 4000 lives per years.Tareque Masud with his wife Catherine Masud has gifted us plenty of patriotic films. He is famous for his honesty and patriotism in whole country. This is a big loss for film lover.May allah bless him..
Why him!!?? Bangladesh just lost one of it's brightest stars.. wishing Catherine Masud a full recovery and extending condolences in the senseless death of her husband...
Totally shocking! Reknowned Film Director Tareq Masud and famous Cinematographer director Mishuk Munir- two of our nation, Bangladesh's most valuable prodigy passed away and that also in a tragic road crash.Totally unexpected,I still can't believe they are no more. This is irrepereable loss for our country. May ALMIGHTY give them a place in Heaven. Bangladesh will remember their immensely precious contribution for ever. We are grateful to you both. May your soul rest in peace. Amen!
