PESHAWAR:
The new reforms introduced in Fata, including changes to the draconian Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) and an extension of the Political Parties Act to Fata, are being heralded as a ‘new dawn’ for the region.
The set of political reforms introduced after two presidential orders were signed by President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday are preceded by the notorious ‘Actions in Aid of Civil Power’ law, which gave sweeping powers to the military and was introduced a month ago.
The law has drawn strong reactions from activist groups as well as political parties, who criticise the law as a violation of human rights.
The new reforms, however, received positive feedback from analysts, political parties and other segments of the population in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the tribal areas.
“It is the beginning of a new day for the people of Fata,” tribal lawmaker Munir Orakzai told The Express Tribune.
