Alia Bhatt has made a mark in Bollywood with her films such as Highway and Udta Punjab, and while her acting skills are commendable, the Gully Boy star is also known for her singing abilities. The actor managed to garner a fair bit of praise for her musical abilities thanks to her singing for movies such as Highway and an unplugged version of Arijit Singh’s soulful Samjhawan in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. However, an old recently-resurfaced video of Bhatt performing live at a stage show has people running for their earmuffs.

The actor, clad in neon, can be seen jumping around on stage while covering the song Kar Gayi Chul from her film Kapoor and Sons. Bhatt sings the song in an almost robotic voice, leaving fans wondering whether her previous successes in music may be attributed to the power of autotune.

Shock and horror

A Twitter user posted the brief clip writing, “I just heard Alia Bhatt singing for the first time and I am not okay.”

Responses to the tweet ranged from disbelief to comparisons being made to viral sensation Dhinchak Pooja. A user replied to the video saying, “You can’t tell me this is an actual performance.”

In a similar vein, another user wrote, “This has to be edited, man? Because the voice is way clearer than the music.” However, the clip, taken from an actual award show in 2017, is as real as it gets.

All for autotune

A user tweeted in reply, “Please tell me it’s edited because now I need an Alia Bhatt and Dhinchak Pooja collab.”

Some fans were confused how Bhatt managed to sing the widely-loved unplugged version of Samjhawan, writing, “Alia Bhatt sang Samjhawan and that turned out so good???” with another user stating that her previous successes can be credited to autotune. They wrote, “I think in the rest of her songs like Samjhawan she used autotune. Dhinchak Pooja is way better than this.”

Still impressed

However, one user was amazed at the actor’s stamina, being able to sing even after jumping around on stage while performing. They tweeted, “The fact that she is singing after dancing like that is commendable.”

Bhatt will be seen next in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, as well as filmmaker Karan Johar’s directorial comeback Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, in which she will star alongside actor Ranveer Singh.
