Students, for no fault of theirs, will have to sit the annual secondary school exam of two subjects, due to sheer negligence of authorities concerned in delivering the question papers.
The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) on Tuesday decided to retake exams of Islamic Studies and Economics subjects of Grade 10 General Group held Monday.
The whole machinery of the examination body of the secondary schools malfunctioned on Monday, the first day of annual exams, resulting in inordinate delays in the delivery of examination papers besides leakage of answers on the social media.
Subsequently, examination could not be conducted at some centres. BSEK Chairman Syed Sharf Ali told the media that the students at examination centres where exam of Grade 10 General Group were not conducted on Monday, July 5 in the second shift will have appear for the papers again. The new date for the Economics and Islamic Studies papers will be announced later, he said.
The board chairman claimed that physics paper of science group was conducted smoothly across the city. He apologised from the students and parents for the time wasted due to BSEK officers' negligence.
He maintained that they are trying not to demonstrate negligence as observed in physics exam that got leaked.
A three-member committee will conduct investigations into the matter and action will be taken against those playing with the future of students.
The papers reached late at the examination centres, which led to a delay in the commencement of the exams while exams for Islamic studies and Economics of Grade 10 general group could not be conducted at some centres.
Meanwhile, exams of elective subjects Arabic and Persian of Grade 10 General Group under BSEK were conducted timely on Tuesday. The two-hour long paper began at 2:30pm and ended at 4:30pm.
Centre superintendent shared that the exam was conducted in an organised manner and under specified timings.
He shared that as per the chairmen board orders they personally collected the examination papers by visiting the hub and brought them to their centres which did not delay the commencement of exams.

The superintendent expressed hope that the students would be able to appear for the remaining papers in a relaxed environment.
Mobile phones banned
Meanwhile, BSEK chairman has barred the invigilating staff from using mobile phones, the internet, and all kinds of devices during the papers of the ninth and tenth class regular and private annual examinations 2021.
He said that the centre superintendents deputed at all the examination centres should sternly direct the staff to avoid telephonic contact during the conduct of exams.
