Man kills sister, neighbour for karo-kari

SHIKARPUR: A man killed his sister and a neighbour in Shikarpur, accusing both of karo-kari.

The suspect, Aijaz Memon, shot his 22-year-old sister, Safia Memon, believing that she was having an affair with their neighbour, Shahnawaz Jiyo. Later, he shot Jiyo as well.

After committing the murders, Aijaz went to the police station along with the gun and confessed to the crime.

While in lock-up, Memon threatened his family members that if they came to claim Safia’s body, he would kill them too.

Safia’s body remained unclaimed for more than 14 hours  at the Edhi morgue. Edhi officials later buried her body after terming it as ‘unclaimed’.

The police have yet to register the case but they handed over Jiyo’s body to his family after conducting a post-mortem.

Meanwhile, Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister Sharmila Farooqui said that illegal jirgas are violating human rights and causing deaths of many people, particularly women, reports PPI news agency.

She commented on the issue after hearing about a jirga decision against a couple in Sanghar who were termed karo-kari when they married of their own will. The jirga also accused the groom of kidnapping his wife.

Farooqui directed DPO Sanghar to provide security to the couple, Atia Parveen and Pir Buksh and take action against the jirga organisers. CCPO Karachi should also ensure security for the couple when they are presented in the Sindh High Court in Karachi, she said.

Syed A. Mateen | 13 years ago | Reply Every one in this world has the right to live. People who kill men and women in the name of Karo-Kari are murderers and should be awarded capital punishment. If cases of Karo-Kari are investigated, people will find that most of the cases occur in the families who have less vision and education. Holding Jirgas should be banned in the country. Awarding punishment is a matter of the court. An individual or group of few people who become members of Jirgas have no right to award capital punishment. If once members of Jirgas are awarded capital punishment by the court of law, I do not think any one in the country can dare to hold Jirga meetings any more.
