KARACHI:

Sarfraz Shah, whose killers received the death penalty and life imprisonment on Friday, made it to C division in the 2011 Matriculation exams, his parents have just learnt.

The young man, who was shot dead by a Rangers jawan on June 8 in one of the country’s most high-profile extra judicial killing cases, was a general group private candidate in high school. His roll number was 610780 and he sat both parts of the exams at the same time. He scored 25 marks in Sindhi, 73 in Islamic Studies, 70 in Civics, 33 in Math, 54 in General Science, 46 in Islamiat, 40 in Pakistan Studies, 67 in English and 33 marks in Urdu. This brought him a total of 441 out of 850 marks or a C division. He went to a Government Boys Secondary School in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

What the rangers did was wrong and the sentences given are quite justified. Having said that do keep in mind Sarfaraz Shah was a thief. A petty thief using a toy gun to rob people. Had he lived he would have eventually either ended up in jail, joined a gang and moved on to higher levels of crime and there remains the slight chance that he would have straightened himself out. My guess is Sarfaraz Shah had come into bad company and started ciommitting robberies. His brother is a journalist and he appears to come froma respectable family who were probably not aware of what he was up to.

This is a failure of our society that our youth are denied constructive after school activities and end up roaming about aimlessly and chances of getting infkluenced by the wrong company are high.
