End of an era: Artists mourns demise of Khursheed Shahid

Highly-acclaimed veteran TV and film star Begum Khursheed Shahid passed away after succumbing to a prolonged illness

Highly-acclaimed veteran TV and film star Begum Khursheed Shahid passed away on Sunday after succumbing to a prolonged illness. She was 95. Actor Salman Shahid, Khursheed’s son, confirmed the news of her demise, informing media personnel that his mother had been on a ventilator after suffering a cardiac arrest a couple of days ago.

Soon after the news of Begum Khursheed’s death surfaced on the internet, many artists took to social media and mourned the loss of the legend.

Saba Hamid penned, "May she rest in eternal peace, deepest condolences to Salman Shahid."

Samina Peerzada added, "RIP Begum Khursheed Shahid. One of our finest. A powerhouse of talent. A grand lady we all admired and loved. She will be remembered and missed forever for all her great roles on TV and theatre, and for her grace and unique style.”

Actor Kubra Khan added, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Begum Khursheed Shahid - may she rest in eternal peace and may her loved ones find the strength to cope.”

Born in 1926, Begum Khursheed began her career in Delhi at All India Radio. She migrated to Pakistan in 1947 and is considered to be one of the pioneers of PTV.

She started her acting as well as singing career at the mere age of nine and went on to receive the highest civil award, the Pride of Performance, in 1984. Uncle Urfi, Zair, Zabar, Pesh and Parchaiyan are some of Begum Khursheed’s best dramas of all time.
