WAPDA awards contract for Tarbela 5th Extension
Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has awarded a contract worth $241.1 million for electro-mechanical works of the 1,530-megawatt Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project to a joint venture company through international competitive bidding.
An agreement was signed on Friday between Wapda and joint venture of Harbin Electric International Company and Harbin Electric Machinery Company (HEIC-HEMC). Wapda has already awarded contract for civil works of the project in May.
Speaking on the occasion, the Wapda chairman said that the Tarbela 5th Extension was yet another project to meet energy needs of the country with low-cost and environment-friendly hydel electricity.
"Wapda is committed to completing this vital project in accordance with the timelines," he stressed.
Referring to its strategy of improving water situation and increasing hydel electricity share in the national grid, he said that Wapda was constructing 10 mega projects in the water and hydropower sectors to meet rapidly increasing requirement of water and electricity in the country.
