No polio cases reported in the region in 11 months: Dr Azra Pechuho

Claiming that not a single new case of polio has been reported from the region during the last 11 months, Provincial Minister of Sindh for Health and Population Welfare Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho termed it a commendable success.

She expressed these views while addressing a meeting with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's polio oversight board delegation, alongside Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah on Wednesday.

The minister and health department officials apprised the meeting about the ongoing polio eradication drive.

"Large number of Afghan migrants likely to arrive in Pakistan after the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan could be a great challenge in Pakistan's fight against polio," said Dr Pechuho.

Chief Minister Mumtaz expressed gratitude towards the World Health Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Rotary International for lending technical and financial support for polio eradication in Pakistan.

The polio supervision board President Dr Chris Elias lauded Sindh government for its efforts and achievements for the cause.
