Nazia Hassan — an icon of the Pakistani music industry — rose to fame with the song “Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Mein”, which she sang for an Indian film titled Qurbani. Hassan was introduced to Qurbani director, Feroz Khan, by Indian-British songwriter and composer, Biddu, and after that there was no turning back. Hassan won a Filmfare Award for the Best Female Playback for this film and later her association with Biddu enabled her to produce her debut album titled Disco Deewane.
From the 15-year-old in ponytails (as seen in one of the videos) to a girl with wavy hair and strikingly good looks in her later years, Hassan was the rising star of the 80’s. She and her brother Zoheb, produced phenomenal songs and out of the box videos; something that nobody had thought of in those early days of Pakistani pop music.
Hassan was a breath of fresh air during General Ziaul Haq’s time, when it was banned to screen women dancing and singing on television. Despite these hindrances, her very first album was a hit, turning her into a celebrity who soon earned the title of the ‘Sweetheart of Pakistan’. Uzma Mazhar, a journalist says, “Making a mark in the world of entertainment during General Zia’s era was not a very easy goal to achieve. Only Nazia Hassan’s music could do it.” She was able to release four albums titled Disco Deewane, Boom Boom, Hazan and Young Tarang during this time. Hassan was the playback singer for eight Bollywood films but it was Aap Jaisa Koi and Star that really added to her fame. Terming her as an extraordinary singer, Amna Raza, a banker says, “There was a time she played a pivotal role in our lives from making the best music to showing posh, youthful videos that served as catharsis in their own way.”
The theme of masquerade parties that she introduced in “Ankhen Milane Wale” was a completely new concept for the Pakistani audience. Whereas, “Dum Dum Dede” was based on the concept of fortune telling and fairytales, with Hassan portraying the role of Alice from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Alice was written under a pseudonym of Lewis Caroll). Both these themes were again very new to the media-deprived Pakistani viewers of the 80’s. Uzma Mazhar, a journalist says, “She positioned herself in such a way that today Pakistani music has gained recognition by working on those same lines.”
However, Hassan’s fifth album Camera Camera was not a hit amongst the masses and the brother-sister duo failed to receive the acclaim they were probably hoping for. It was after this that Hassan took a step back from singing and focus more on her personal life. She married businessman Mirza Ishtiaq Baig in 1995 and gave birth to her son Arez in 1997. The young star contracted cancer and passed away in 2000.
In 2002, she was conferred with Pride of Performance and in 2003 her family started a charity organisation under her name.
Hassan’s larger than life aura still looms over the music industry and is deeply embedded in her fans who can’t seem to forget the artist. Ahmed Haseeb, another one of her fans, directed and produced A Music Fairy: A Tribute to Nazia Hassan in 2007. The documentary was screened at Kara Film Festival in 2009 and won an award for the Best Documentary at the festival.
Published in The Express Tribune, August 13th, 2011.
Correction: Alice in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carroll, a pseudonym used by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.
The movie Qurbani was incorrectly mentioned as Aap Jaisa Koi. The correction has been made.

We should make a film on this legendary, gorgious lady and give her a tribute. She is the only female singer i like.
I really don't understand why "A Music Fairy" has not been released in the market in 4 years. People in the West promote their legends. But the documentary on the biggest superstar of our country is being withheld from the public. I do not understand the reason at all.
What was the need to make it when it had to be kept hidden?
I hope Mr. Ahmed Haseeb and Mr. Zohaib Hassan are reading this.
At the author: Maybe her last album was not as successful as her previous albums were but her Punjabi song, Tali Di Thallay, from her last album was a huge hit in Pakistan.
She was wonderful.
i must say a very beautifull person nd i really wish tht i could have met her ....may Allah give her place in heaven.ameen
she was a gorgeous and beautiful lady with the most beautiful voice i have ever heard and even enjoy it today whenever i hear her songs. no wonder if she would have been alive today she would have been in the hall of fame in pakistan. may god forgive her and bless her soul with the jannat.
She was superb!
Songs by Nazia never failed to bring on a smile. And, now... a smile and a tear. She was and will always be one of a kind.
The above mentioned documentary is wonderful but it won the award in 2007 in some other film festival not in Kara
She was the find of music director Biddu Appaiah and she and her brother sang some more awesome songs in a movie called Star, which flopped.
Till now, I did not know that Nazia had passed away. What a talent, may her soul rest in peace !!!
We still Love you Nazia, God bless you, and shower his mercy on your soul.
She was not only gorgeous and a great singer, but she was also very intelligent. She got her law degree from London and worked in the UN. She also deeply cared for her nation, Pakistan. I remeber watching her interviews on television, she was a patriotic Pakistani and a wonderful human being. Rest in peace Nazia Hassan, you will always be known as the Sweetheart of Pakistan.
Nazia and Zoeb were the first and the best. And very good people too. I saw Zoeb on a Pakistani talk show on YouTube. What a gentleman, through and through. A rare appearance, for a private citizen. Pity, he does not sing still ... or does he? Celebrities with class ... it is a rare act these days, in our thumkaa-jhumkaa pop culture. Nazaakat and tehzeeb is out of the door and into the dustbin. Heaven help us.
i havent seen any movie named aap jaisa koi . the song aap jaisa koi is from film qurbani .
We love you :)
Nazia Hassan is still my sweetheart singer.....
Love you Nazia ♥. One in a Zillion!!
I beleive Nazia hasan introduced modern music in Pakistan something we desperately needed to keep up with the outside world of music. Her music helped me thru my final year at UET.
love u and miss you nazia...you still rule my ipod...
Thanks for your article, hers was a wonderful and very distinctive voice
Small correction: The Indian film the song came in was Qurbani and not Aap Jaisa Koi
As in Pakistan, the song, Aap jaisa koi mere zindagi mein aaye, was hugely popular in India and showed that the world did not begin and end with the Mangeshkar sisters (Lata and Asha). The success of the albums that followed (Disco Deewane ...) showed that it was not a fluke and created space for other singers and for other modes of singing. She opened the gates.
Nazia was icon of Pakistan, she was pioneer of pop, we always miss you Nazia. May God bless you in eternal peace. Ameen.
Please correct "Indian film titled Aap Jaisa Koi" is wrong titled Correct film titled is Qurbani.
@ Sadia Qamar
Dear Sadia,
I appreciate the effort.
Bt when we write an obituary like this, it is imperative that we hv our facts in place.
The song " Ap jaisa koi......" was an " item number " song in the film Qurbani.....and not of the film " aap jaisa koi " , as mentioed in ur article.
To the best of my knowledge, Nazia received the 1981 Filmfare Award for the Best Female Playback for the said song.
She also set the record of being the youngest ever recipient of the said award, at the mere age of 15.
I knew her well, as well as her brother Zohaib, with whom I had the pleasure of working on a project. Nice, educated n decent people.
Her untimely death reminds me of the classic ballad written n recorded by the incomparable Michael Jackson, GONE TOO SOON.
Keep up the good work Sadia, as we ought to remember those who splashed a smile on our faces thru their good work. Its even more true in these times, when smiling is fast turning into a rare social phenomenon, given the predicament of our social fabric, and the monsterous challenges it faces day in n out.
Peace n Cheers!!!!

Nazia Hassan will be remembered by all people of her age group for a long time.
Unfortunately, she passed away before time due to cancer disease. Her untimely death had not only shattered her immediately family members but also her uncounted fans in the world.
May Al-Mighty Allah rest her soul in peace. Ameen.
Nazia hassan personified grace. She is truly a pakistani icon.Fate has been cruel to us to take her away so soon but her music lives on in everyone's hearts.
Rest in peace Nazia, you will always be missed but never forgotten.
Wow. She is a grace. May she rest in peace.
I remember, last year I was changing channels, her one song: "Aap jaisa koi" mentioned above was on air on a music channel, my aunt 52 years old who had headache and could not bear my voice, hold my hand and told me to put it again. I was amazed. I asked her what happened to her, she said that she heard it in her times and she has many memories attached with the song. I pitted my ignorance about her when I heard her songs, and watched one of videos that covers book: "Alice's adventures in Wonderland.
It is always listening to her songs.
Miss Saadia, good journalism demands a careful attention to facts when writing. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carroll ( pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) and not 'C.S Lewis' as you have written.
She was the ICON of paki pop!A True gem. We will always miss you Nazia. RIP
truly one in a billion!
