A little backgrounder is in order. During the last India-England Test, (literate) commentator and former England captain Nasser Hussain took issue with the (unlettered) commentator and former Indian captain Ravi Shastri, over the use of the Decision Review System (DRS). Shastri had attacked his colleague for airing a strong view supporting the use of DRS. In an argument heard live by millions, Hussain told Shastri that he was doing his job; that the broadcaster pays him precisely because he has an opinion. The broadcaster pays Shastri, too. But Shastri’s real employers were revealed last week. The Indian board, it turns out, pays Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar Rs36 million each annually to be their mouthpieces in the commentary box. The broadcasters pay them fees in addition. In fact, no broadcaster can drop them from a commentary team for games played in India: that is the nature of their contract with the board. In return, they have agreed to hawk their employer’s line whenever they are in the box, criticise umpiring decisions that go against India and outshout any critical murmurs.
As far as conflict of interest goes, the case is far too clear-cut to be made again. We have only Shastri’s and Gavaskar’s word that the opinions they express are unfettered by their tidy contracts with the board. But the argument spirals down on to itself pretty neatly. The most infuriating part of this story is the manner in which the two former Mumbai cricketers have cast themselves as upholders of the proud tradition of Indian cricket, and worse, the honour of the country. Gavaskar’s comments in this area are particularly cringe-inducing. When MS Dhoni’s gesture of recalling Ian Bell after a controversial run-out in the last game was being hailed as an act of great sportsmanship, our little master of deceit growled, “Why must it always be India that has to show sportsman’s spirit?”
Shastri appears on television as if always on the verge of saying something of great import, and invariably ends up saying something either completely inconsequential or downright petty. The English media (including commentators) were apparently jealous of India’s success, he said in the lead up to the spat between him and Hussain. Till the news of the pay cheque came along, a credulous public might well have believed that the views of its two stalwarts were, even if biased, evidence of a just about tolerable brand of poorly articulated patriotism. The Indian board doesn’t have many fans in India, viewed as they are as greedy, corrupt and political. Gavaskar and Shastri don’t deserve a reputation that is any better.
It must be said here that the intentions of other boards in the subcontinent aren’t any more honourable. The Pakistan board can barely pay its players, so thought control, through paid for commentary, is probably low on the priority list. Plus, the landscape is too volatile for any steady opinion building. Sri Lanka, though, is different. I could be wrong, but there aren’t any pay cheques waiting for its commentators. Instead, unless they say ‘His Excellency the President’ about 18 times every match day, and speak of the ‘dawn of the new era of peace’, they could be made to pay. His Excellency’s men are everywhere, alert to anything other than the deathly boring descriptions that his countrymen might serve up.
As for me, I will be alert to whatever stalwarts Shastri and Gavaskar dish out over the coming five days. The opportunity to view (proven) hypocrisy live is hard to pass up. I will also be interested in what the English commentators sharing the box with Shastri and Gavaskar have to say. Particularly Nasser Hussain. Unless there’s been a quick redrawing of contracts, he is still paid to voice his opinion on important cricketing issues. In the age of television, the integrity of the commentary box must surely be maintained.
I believe the right thing to do for the English commentators would be to call Shastri and Gavaskar’s conduct disgraceful and press for explanations on air. If the two of them leave in embarrassment (unlikely) or indignation (more plausible), then Hussain and co. would immediately qualify for India’s highest civilian award — even if they are never considered for positions in the IPL’s commentary teams.

well said.
This Mariya lady...she never joins in the debate by refuting points logically and coherently. She does not add any value to the blog and she does not offer any useful insights. She also does not offer contradictory viewpoints . All she ever does is to abuse the commenter.
I request Mariya not to abuse me please !!!
BALLISTIC Reply From Mariya :D
India getting their comeuppance and getting royally thrashed - all hail King Cook the world's best batsman at the moment....
During the world cup Ravi said the pakistan Team were like an auto Rickshaw compared to the indians which said were like a BMW. It was a pretty tasteless and insensitive remark. Both Shastri and Gavaskar are full of hubris. Tney should learn some humility from Sachin Tendulkar and Dhoni who are greater players than these two. sachin would never dismiss his opponents in that fashion. pride comes before a fall. mr. lalit Modi knows that as well.
I am so glad someone finally wrote about these two! their views have been so lopsided that they kinda amused me. but guys please refrain from making sweeping genralizations and stereotypes about anyone.
Dont know about Ravi Shastri but Sunil Gavaskar has always been a critic of Anglo Aussie cricket power since when he started writing newspaper columns. He is consistent in calling a spade a spade and i like him for standing up when other non Indian commentators take pot shots at BCCI and Indian cricket. The fact that he has a good command over English helps too, because the English damn with faint praise and he gives it back in the same coin. Btw, who are Nasser Hussain and Vaughn in comparison to Gavaskar? And maintaining the integrity of commentary box..lol that is a figment of the author's imagination. I d rather have Gavaskar and Shastri in the commentary box than Nasser Hussain.
lol mariya, one can clearly see from ur comment who's the bigot here. on other note i agree with the columnist, ravi shastri and gavaskar have brought disgrace to the country.the only word shastri seems to know is "magnificent",he is irritating as hell.
India's Progress is corruption driven. No doubt integrity comes last and money comes first.
I remember several years ago when Tony Grieg was interviewing sarfaraz Nawaz live and he accused Gavaskar alongwith Asif iqbal) of being the pioneers of match fixing. and all this happened with Sunil Gavaskar fuming in the commentary box. the strange part is Gavaskar never bothered to take any legal action and im yet to figure out the reasons for that.
Correctly pointed out man. Worst part is when Gavaskar comments on batting techniques or mistakes made by the great Sachin. i mean there is no comparison in the India team at their times and what it has become now.
such pompousness is aided and abetted by the fact that india is now the "head office" of world cricket. lots of money, ipl, test ranking (soon to be relinquished), strong economy- well this is what has made these two commies (commentators) somewhat cocky!
This revelation is another proof of how crudely and ferociously the BCCI is trying to exert its control over World Cricket. Considering the wide gulf between the two sides, there's barely little hope for India to avoid the whitewash, however I apprehend that 'hidden hands' would again put their act together and dissuade this calamity from striking Indian cricket.
@MS - Mariya:
Maria, are you refering to Amir Sohail who as a commentator suggested that an injured Tendulkar be denied a runner during ICC World Cup 2002/03 Indo-Pak match? Are you?!
I do remember Ravi Shashtri saying "Amir, you spoke like a true Pakistani" Amir Sohail replied, "Well, thank you Ravi"
Thanks for bringing this up. Was really waiting for someone to bash at them!
@Rock So you are telling us that you are not a Bigot? Btw check again bigot is a word with an acceptable definition.Moron or idiot would rather qualify as offensive.Get your Offence scale a little de-sensitized,budd.
why couldnt they just put manjrekar and ganguly on as panelists from the indian side....ganguly is probably one of the most intelligent commentators i have come across and manjrekar is well....not biased unlike chirchira buddha gavaskar....and middle-aged creep shastri.
I think it won't be a bad idea for ICC to introduce panel of commentators likewise the umpires.
@Rock:
I second you, these woman has no points except to use some filthy words against India, hope moderators maintains the standard in comment section.
I Really Liked MS- Mariya's Comment :D Go Girl Go. :)
It’s really surprising that after the reports of Mr.Gavaskar and Mr.Shastri being on the payrolls of BCCI, almost everybody is viscously targeting them. Before the revelations of the employment terms of Gavaskar and Shastri, there was hardly anyone in the media who was questioning their neutrality and now everyone is saying, “I told you so”. Look, I am not for a moment defending BCCI or holding any brief for Gavaskar and Shastri. BCCI has long being rightly accused of commercializing cricket at the expense of the fitness of players and quality of cricket being played. I have pointed out some of these issues in my blog. http://sonamshyam.blogspot.com/2011/08/crown-is-slipping.html. But the larger point is that if BCCI appoints people to put forward their view point then what’s wrong with that? Every organization has their own PR guys and if BCCI blows its own trumpet via Gavaskar and Shastri then they are very much entitled to do so. In any case, two ex cricketers do not have the wherewithal to influence the opinion of a billion plus cricket crazy people. The journalists and the ex cricketers in particular are simply going over the top in criticizing Gavaskar and Shastri. I tell you what; almost everyone in the media would have happily done the same job for BCCI in 1/10th of the money which Gavaskar and Shastri are getting. The media and in people in general are being too self righteous on this issue.
@MS - Mariya: You are using offensive words like bigot. In past you have used for me too without anyreason. reference - http://tribune.com.pk/story/217709/india-most-depressed-nation-in-the-world-who-report/ I think you have read my reply to your usage of word bigot. Next time try to avoid using these offensive words.
Commentators shouldnot be under the influence of anyone other than the TV channel. Indierectly this means they work for the viewers. Period. Gavaskar and Shastri are wrong to use the commentary box to mouth BCCI's viewpoints around the world.
Why is it that Indian's bashing Indians is never complete without bringing Pakistan in? Why is it always like, India is bad but Pakistan isn't good either? The comments on the PCB, true or not, seemed out of place and a poor attempt to somehow make up for the scathing remarks on the author's own board.
Gavaskar is acceptable but Ravi Shastri has been the most baised commentator ever.
What do you expect from a commentator representing a bigot self righteous nation?!?!
Overall though India is a country with new found fame and money. Newly rich and famous are always trying to razzle and dazzle with money and English. Neither goes well in our culture and nor does it last. Indians are soon to find out that they are no Australia. They have no sustaining power. The sweep is on.
But can someone import Navjot Sidhu and replace our Rehman Malik with him? We need to add some colour and entertainment - his turban is lethal enough to keep us indoors. Karachi could use him.
@Ahmad Ali Khalid: Yes, as if the PCB and Pak team are angels !!! Don't forget there is a little crown court case coming up in London regarding the incidents involving Pak palyers on their last tour of England!!!! The Indians have completely lost the plot on this tour, for whatever the reasons may be, and they are a serious embarrassment to watch at present!! the very idea that tickets have been changing hands for over £100 for a day's play, to watch these bunch of overpaid and egomanics is too much for me to absorb !!!
@Author I am with you 100%. Mr. Gavaskar is either deceitfull or conceited (take your pick) in his comments. (Though I rate him as one of the greatest batsman ever) Mr. Shastri is a master of platitudes and inanities. (Sorry can't say much about his cricket)
They will read any one's script for the right price. Their self-serving peddling of misplaced nationalism from a commentary box doesn't serve the cause of Indian cricket and it's image, rather it makes us as Indians a loughing stock around the world of cricket fraternity. They need to be told that it's 64 years that we have got our freedom from the whites (read British) and there is no need to carry the colonial baggage (of inferiority complex). Both of them are a disgrace to the spirit of cricket.
@Ahmad Ali Khalid Is it necessary to bring things like 'India', 'Hindutva' (by the way, I am an atheist) into a discussion about cricket? Please, please, come out of this ...phobia. (equally applies to many Indians)
England Will Surely Beat India in this 3rd Test Match. They are Leading with 200+ runs & with only 3 wickets down. Ravi Shastri indeed is a Disgrace to commentary, A commentator must be Impartial he is not supposed to be a PARTY in the match!! The Bubble of CHAMPIONS will burst by the end of this Test Match! ENGLAND PREVAILS!!
Corrupt to the core - welcome to the sub-continent (and to all the Hindutva trolls - India is no exception - if not its worse becaues of big business).
Good points raised! Their conduct has become an embarrassment to people.
Nasser Hussain in his commentary, said, Harbhajan Singh would be still batting if the DRS was there in full. And he proceeded to launch an attack on BCCI, IPL and other evil ways of Indian cricket.
Ravi Shastri is there to offer the point of India, what is he supposed to do? Agree wholeheartedly to the tirade of everyone? He did what was expected of him. Ravi Shastri explained the Indian view point and the concerns of Indian players. Sachin, and Dhoni have strong views on DRS. They are also mouth pieces of BCCI ? Do you think Botham will keep quiet if Ian Chappell says something uncharitable about English cricket ?
All Ravi said was, don't take potshots at India, using the handle of DRS. If a captain makes two wrong referrals in the first over of a match, the DRS and technology will be come meaningless. The technology will still be there, and the howlers, which the DRS is supposed to eliminate, will be there too. This is what Ravi Shastri was articulating. And he did a good job of it.
Till date, I have not heard one lopsided view or biased comment from either Ravi Shastri or Gavaskar that would indicate that they have been 'bought'. I am yet to hear one slip from them to indicate that their credibility is at stake.
When India wins, cricket experts were lamenting, how Indian board is dominating the world cricket using the India's ascendancy. When India is losing, everyone is having a go, hinting at the wicked IPL and BCCI and the greedy, selfish cricketers.
Sometime back, TimesNow ran a smear campaign on Gavaskar's links with Modi. And now comes this story from TOI, Ravi Shastri and Gavaskar are in the payroll of BCCI as if it is some kind of mafia. Gavaskar has still some credibility left, but not Times of India !!
