KARACHI:

Special assistant to the Punjab chief minister on information and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Firdous Ashiq Awan has said the Pakistan Democratic Movement has been "slaughtered" by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) - one of the parties constituting the opposition alliance.

Addressing a press conference at the residence of opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh on Sunday, she said that after meeting its fate, it was now time for the opposition alliance to revive itself.

Firdous' statements came three days after the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, two major components of the PDM, locked horns, both staking claim on the coveted post of the leader of the opposition in the Senate.

The PPP blamed the PML-N for the growing chaos over the opposition leader's post, while the latter accused the former of backtracking on its earlier commitment to give the position to it in exchange for supporting the opposition's candidate in the election for Senate chairperson and deputy chairperson.

Besides, the PPP has also delayed its decision on en masse resignations from the assemblies - a move supported by rest of the parties in the PDM.

'Drama of democracy'

The PTI leader further stated that the PPP raised the voice for democracy to come to power and now it was evident that the party was putting up an act.

"The PPP's drama of democracy was exposed the day Haleem was arrested," she said.

Firdous said "fake cases" against Haleem were in fact making him stronger.

"PTI workers are united and their morale is high and those who put Haleem in jail should realise their stupidity," she went on.

Coming back to the PDM, she dubbed the position alliance a "circus", maintaining that the "courtiers of Zardari" and followers of the PML-N were trying to send Prime Minister Imran Khan packing.

"But they have failed. The PPP has sacrificed the PDM," added Firdous. "And it must now revive itself before talking about toppling the federal government."

Prior to the press conference, Firdous met Haleem at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, she assured him of all possible cooperation from the party.

Firdous was accompanied by PTI leader Khurram Sher Zaman.
