Armed robbers loot over Rs1m from bank in Karachi

They exchanged fire with cops while fleeing, says police

KARACHI:

Robbers broke into a bank in North Nazimabad, Karachi on Wednesday and made away with cash worth more than Rs1 million.

The CCTV footage of the incident shows four armed robbers, carrying pistols and repeaters, barging into the bank and holding people hostage at gunpoint.

When a security guard showed resistance, they hit him on the head with the grip of a pistol and fired gunshots into the air.

The robbers then looted money from a cash counter in the bank and fled.

Eyewitnesses said the motorcycle on which two of the four robbers were riding broke down near the bank as they were escaping.

However, when citizens tried to catch them, they fired guns into the air, snatched a motorcycle from a passerby and fled, the eyewitnesses added.

The robbers were wearing shalwar kameez and surgical masks.

Rangers and police personnel have gathered the details of the incident from bank employees.

According to Central SP Ghulam Murtaza Tabassum, the robbers made away with Rs1.35 million from the bank and further investigations are underway.

The SP said that geo-fencing was being conducted as part of the investigation and fingerprints and other evidence was being collected from the crime scene.

SP Tabassum further stated that the robbers had traded gunshots with cops in a police mobile while fleeing.
