Punjab minister urges focus on hybrid wheat

Terms it vital to ensure food security across globe

There is a dire need to ensure cultivation of hybrid wheat on a large scale in the country, said Punjab Minister for Agriculture Hussain Jahania Gardezi.

Addressing a seminar at the Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture on Saturday, he lauded the efforts of the varsity aimed at promotion of hybrid wheat.

“Hybrid wheat is of vital importance to address food security issues across the globe,” he said. The minister apprised the participants that the government was striving hard to modernise the agriculture sector to improve productivity and benefit the peasants.

Also speaking on the occasion, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Vice Chancellor Dr Asif Ali said that the demand of wheat would increase in the developed countries in future.

“Food security is becoming a challenge for the world,” he said, adding, “In the future maximum focus would be allotted to agriculture.”

He informed the minister that the varsity cultivated hybrid wheat with an objective to convince farmers to move towards this crop. Services of national and international agriculture experts have also been availed in this regard, he added.
