The fault within: Artists call out Grammys

Many celebrities have lined up to call out the Recording Academy and the Grammys organisers, accusing them of being biased and corrupt, and ignoring those who don’t stay in touch with them. From The Weeknd to Zayn Malik, Halsey and Drake, artists have used their social media platforms to speak up against favouritism and the rigged arrangement of award shows.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd was nominated for zero Grammys, despite having a record-breaking year with his hit singles Blinding Lights, Save Your Tears and Heartless from the popular album, After Hours. Back in November, the musician tweeted, “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency.” Later, the celeb told New York Times that he will never submit his music for consideration again.

Drake

Following suit, Drake posted on his Instagram story and shed light on the same. He compared the Grammys to "a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just can't change their ways."

Nicki Minaj

The rapper shared her encounter with the 2012 Grammys in a detailed tweet. “Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award, when I had seven songs simultaneously charting on billboards and a bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade. I went on to inspire a generation but they gave it to the white man Bon Iver.” However, the internet was divided and left wondering whether her post was in relation to The Weeknd’s controversy or simply adding to the biases present in the association.

Halsey

In reference The Weeknd’s hullabaloo, Halsey stated, "The Grammys are an elusive process. It can be about behind the scenes private performances, knowing the right people, campaigning through the grapevine — with just enough handshakes and 'bribes' that can be just ambiguous enough to pass as 'not-bribes’."

Zayn Malik

The British songwriter and former One Direction band member also slammed the Grammys in a string of tweets, accusing them of being corrupt and bogus. The 28-year-old singer then clarified that his rant was not about him alone or his recently released music, which did not qualify to be considered for this year's nominations, but about the musicians who were repeatedly ignored by the Grammys.

The 63rd annual Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on March 14 in Los Angeles. The event is scheduled to stream on multiple TV channels on the day.
