Anya Taylor-Joy wrongly called ‘woman of colour’

The actor recently rose to fame for her performance as a chess prodigy in 'The Queen's Gambit'

Despite identifying herself as a white Latina on multiple platforms, The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor was wrongly called ‘woman of colour’ after her Golden Globe win last Sunday. As reported by The Independent, the incorrect association has landed industry magazine Variety in trouble.

Taylor was born in Miami, Florida to a Scottish-Argentine father. On Sunday, the Peaky Blinders actor won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture for her role as Beth Harmon, a chess champion.

As soon as the article was published, Variety met heavy criticism online for their choice of words being linked to the star. Originally it read, “Argentinian Taylor-Joy is the first woman of colour to win this category since Queen Latifah in 2008 and only the fifth woman of colour to win overall since 1982 when the category was introduced. S Epatha Merkerson, Halle Berry and Alfre Woodard were the other previous winners.”

Soon, the magazine issued an apology on Twitter and updated their story to better reflect Anya’s ancestry correctly. A user had tweeted, “Friendly reminder that being Latina and being a woman of colour are not always the same thing. Congrats to Anya Taylor-Joy (Argentina) for her Golden Globe win and for speaking up.”

This was followed by another user tweeting, “Not Variety calling Anya Taylor Joy a woman of colour! What colour? Blonde?”

Lastly, a user tweeted, “This situation with Variety calling Anya Taylor Joy a woman of colour takes me back to that time when another Selenator told me that Selena isn't white, she is ‘People of Colour’ because she is Latina and I had ‘no culture.’ Laugh out loud.”
