KARACHI:

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) moved the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday to take action over what it dubbed the “use of the Governor House for political purposes.

In a letter addressed to the chief election commissioner of Pakistan, PPP central election cell in-charge Taj Haider maintained that the governor had headed a meeting at the Governor House, where a plan was devised to make opposition members in Sindh bag majority of Senate seats in the province.

The letter stated that the reports of the event were broadcast on multiple television channels and published in newspapers, with Haider claiming that some newspapers also reported about the consultation council of the PTI’s Sindh chapter taking exception to the Sindh governor alleged move of lobbying for his favourite candidates from his party to succeed in the upcoming Senate elections.

Haider went on to claim that the consultation council had demanded the removal of the Sindh governor from his post.

“The statement of the consultation proves that PTI’s candidates have been selected by Ismail, which is a blatant violation of Section 5 of the ECP rules and regulations,” the letter read, adding that under Section 5, the president and the governors of all provinces were directed not to get involved in campaigns for Senate elections.

But the Sindh governor misused his authority to interfere in the fair election process and used his influence to get votes for his favourites, Haider alleged in the letter.

The letter further stated that the presence of PTI lawmakers in the consultation meeting was a violation of the code of conduct defined by the chief election commissioner during a meeting on February 22, 2021.
