Under the new Local Government Amendment Act, the only town committee of Rawalpindi district Daultala, has been abolished and merged with Tehsil Council Gujjar Khan. Tehsil Council Gujjar Khan has become the largest tehsil of Rawalpindi.
This has also paved the way for Gujjar Khan to become a new district in the future. With this decision the number of Union Councils (Neighbourhood Councils) of Tehsil Gujar Khan haveincreased from 34 to 48.
The district headquarters Rawalpindi Tehsil Council will consist of 19 Union Councils, while there are 13 Union Councils of Murree, 11 of Kohota Tehsil, 10 of Kallar Syyedan, eight of Taxila and six Union Councils of Kotli Sattiyan. Under the new Local Government Amendment Act, all newly formed town committees across Punjab with a population of up to 50,000 have been abolished.
Under the old law, there were a total of 100 town committees in Punjab. With the new law, 65 town committees have been abolished and now there are only 45 town committees left in Punjab. The funds, employees and assets of the abolished town committees have also been merged into the adjoining tehsil councils.
