Man ‘tortured to death by in-laws’

Victim was tied up by deranged suspects and beaten with an iron rod

A man was allegedly tortured to death by his in-laws in Dijkot on Sunday.

Athar Javed, a resident of Chak No 267RB, Jalandhar, got married six years ago to the sister of the suspects named Muhammad Ilyas and Samar Iqbal, the sons of Muhammad Ashraf, residents of 271RB, Magar Singh area.

The couple had three children. On the day of the incident, Athar was returning on a rickshaw after dropping off the college girls when his deranged in-laws Ilyas, Samar, Ashraf and Munawar Hussain, grabbed Athar from the road and took him to their house. At their house, the suspects tied him up and beat him up with iron rods and sticks. The victim was severely wounded due to the physical assault.

Later, in an attempt to cover up the crime, the suspects themselves informed police and complained that the victim was tortured by someone else. The injured Athar was shifted to Dijkot Hospital in a critical condition. He was later shifted to Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Dijkot police took timely action and arrested Samar and Ilyas on suspicion of perpetrating the assault.

The arrested suspects confessed to the police during their detention that the victim had got married to their sister by his own choice.

Now he was asking for a share of the property.

The suspects had broken both the legs and one arm of the victim by hitting him with an iron rod, The Express Tribune learnt.
