ISLAMABAD:

National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser has decided to convene a session of the lower house of parliament on the requisition of the opposition next week and stressed that by maintaining cordial atmosphere in the house legislation could be enacted in a better manner.

The decision was taken in a meeting between the speaker and Adviser to Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan. Matters pertaining to legislation and important issues of national importance were discussed in the meeting.

It was decided that the requisitioned National Assembly session would be convened on Monday, February 15. They also agreed that the proceedings of the house would be conducted under the rules and regulations of the assembly.

Qaiser said that conducting the proceedings in a smooth manner and ensuring a conducive atmosphere in the house were the joint responsibility of the government and the opposition. “Commotion in the house is neither a service to democracy nor to the people,” he added.

The speaker assured that important matters of national importance would be discussed in the coming sessions. “The eyes of the people are on their elected representatives, therefore, the elected representatives will have to solve the people’s problems through parliament.”

On the occasion, Awan praised the role of Qaiser in conducting the house proceedings. He said that the treasury and the opposition had always been given equal opportunity in the proceedings of the house by the speaker.

Awan expressed the hope that National Assembly members would keep the rules and regulations in mind in the next session and play their positive role in conducting the proceedings of the house in a conducive environment.

The adviser to the prime minister said that all the political parties in parliament should discuss important issues of national and public importance so as to increase the confidence of the people in their elected representatives.
