ISLAMABAD:

A disgruntled group of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) employees staged a protest outside the National Press Club against what they called is ‘privatisation’ of the hospital in the name of Medical Teaching Institute (MTI) Act.

The protest against the MTI Act entered its 64th day. Grand Health Alliance (GHA) maintains that the Act will allow the hospital management to charge fee for some services like radiology and sonography which were earlier free of cost.

Moreover the Act gives consultants permission for private practice at the hospital’s premises in the evening.

The protesting PIMS employees said they have come out to save the hospital and will continue their struggle against the plans to privatise the public healthcare facility.

A representative of the protesting medical practitioners said that they were fighting for the rights of the poor patients.

He reminded that as per the MTI Act, draft employees who opt for private practice within the premises of the hospital, clinics, imaging facilities and laboratories of Pims will get more salary, bonuses and benefits while those who do not opt for private practice shall not be entitled to any increase in salary or bonuses.
