ECP to seek army’s help during by-polls

A letter would be written to the federal government soon

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to deploy army to maintain the law and order situation during the upcoming by-elections in eight constituencies of the national and provincial assemblies, which will take place in different parts of the country in the coming weeks.

Sources on Saturday said the ECP had completed consultations on security matters during the by-elections. They added that it had been decided that the army would be on duty outside the polling stations, while police would be responsible for the security inside. In this regard, according to the sources, a letter would be written to the federal government soon.

The election in PS-52 Umarkot constituency will be held on Jan 18, while voting inPS-43 Sanghar, PS-88 Malir, PB-20 Pishin [Balochistan] constituencies are scheduled for February 16. On February 19, ballots will be cast in NA-45 Kurram, NA-75 Sialkot, PP-51 Gujranwala and PK-63 Nowshera.

Party accountsSeparately, the ECP has also decided to monitor the foreign funding of all the registered political parties and in this regard it has sent letters to the political parties, seeking details of their foreign accounts, if any.According to the Election Act 2017, the political parties will have to provide a certificate of compliance with Section 200 of the act. Under provisions of the act,all political parties cannot have militant elements among them
