RAWALPINDI:

All brick kilns in Rawalpindi district equipped with eco-friendly zigzag technology have been given permission to start operations.

Rawalpindi environment department has started checking all brick kilns to inspect if the new technology has been installed, said Environment Protection Department (EPD ) Deputy Director Asghar Ali Rana

The old work permits of all kilns that did not shift to eco-friendly technology until the deadline of December 31 have been revoked, he said.

It has also been decided to seal brick kilns having installed zigzag technology only as showpiece but still operating on old technology.

So far, the environment department has tallied the installation of eco-friendly technology to be only in 62 of 215 brick kilns in the Rawalpindi district.

Rana said that the brick kilns still unequipped with zigzag technology would not be allowed to operate.
