KARACHI:

Citizens, under the banner of the Luminary Learning Circle Foundation (LLCF) - an organisation working for education, launched a drive to repair Karachi roads on Sunday.

They began with carpeting the road leading from Shafiq Morr to Sohrab Goth, in addition to levelling pits on the artery and painting the pavements running along its length.

This road, already in a dilapidated condition, witnessed further deterioration following devastating rains this monsoon season. As a result, traffic jams and accidents were a frequent occurrence there.

Aiming to completely rehabilitate the road, LLCF members and other volunteers also cleaned the greenbelts alongside it.

Speaking to the media, LLFC president Farooq Ahmed Khan said that the road repair and maintenance campaign had been launched with the support of associations and private companies operating in Federal B area and industrial zone in North Karachi.

He further stated that the LLF intended to revamp the artery connecting Peoples Colony and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road next.

The move came in the backdrop of the federal and Sindh government constantly blaming each other for Karachi’s deteriorating infrastructure, while delays in local government polls and an alleged lack of funds leaving the city’s municipalities in a disarray. Moreover, citizens are yet to start seeing the results of uplift and restoration work promised under a Rs1.1 trillion package announced for Karachi by Prime Minister Imran Khan following the destruction caused by heavy monsoon rains this year.
