Citizens assaulted a man in North Karachi on Friday night, mistaking him for a robber.

According to SHO Shamshad Chachar, two policemen, patrolling a locality on a motorcycle, had flagged to men, also on a motorcycle. However, the men tried to flee, which made citizens believe that they were robbers, he said.

Citizens present at the spot caught one of them and assaulted him, while his partner managed to escape, the SHO added.

The police took the injured man in their custody and shifted him to a hospital for treatment.

The arrested man was identified as Shahrukh, who is a generator mechanic.

SHO Chachar said the men flagged by the police did not have the documents for the vehicle, which was why they tried to escape. He added that the duo did not have any past criminal record and no weapons were found in their possession.

Later, Shahrukh's companion was summoned to the police station.

The police are further investigating the matter.
