The demand for warm winter clothes has seen a sharp rise in the federal capital after the recent cold wave. As evening temperatures have registered a significant decrease since the last rain spell in the city, residents have been compelled to layer up with sweaters and jackets to keep themselves warm. Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) Dr Khalid Malik said that temperatures in the city plummeted to as low as -2 on Thursday night.
He warned that the current cold wave could persist for a few more days. However, he said that it is unlikely to force the temperature down further. The temperatures will rise a little in the coming days but again decrease after another rain spell in the last week of December, he pointed out. “Due to changing climatic patterns, it is necessary to take precautions against seasonal diseases that can result in a weaker immune system, especially with the looming threat of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19),” said Shaista, who was shopping for warm clothes in the federal capital. She bought warm clothes and other accessories for her children, taking advantage of the discounts offered by various brands. Another customer, Irum, said that she waits for sales to buy winter clothes due to rampant inflation.
“Online shopping has made it easier [and safer] during the pandemic to purchase winter essentials at reasonable rates,” she added. Akram, a retailer, said December is the best month to earn profits by offering discounts on products ahead of the new year.
