The first time Bollywood diva Tara Sutaria turned heads was when she stepped out of her car for a Diwali party last year, draped in a striking silver, sequined Manish Malhotra sari. The starlet had kept a rather low profile since her debut in last year’s Student of the Year 2 but still maintained a love-hate relationship with the paparazzi.
One thing, however, Sutaria can never keep on the down-low is her remarkable sense of fashion. Let it be a little black dress or a heavily embellished lehenga choli, the starlet definitely knows how to up the style quotient. There aren't many youngsters in Bollywood these days who can work ethnic wear (um, we are looking at you, Sara Ali Khan) as well but Sutaria seems to carry the eccentric-est of outfits with effortless ease.
Soon after Diwali, the actor made headlines when she dressed to impress at her beau Aadar Jain's brother Armaan’s wedding festivities. She was her breathtaking self during the nuptials, donning gorgeous Manish Malhotra and Anita Dongre ensembles.
Most recently, the Marjaavan starlet has graced the cover of Elle India’s November edition. You might have spotted the images of the gorgeous Sutaria on Instagram already. But look closely and you will realise that the patterns on some of the outfits she is sporting in them are quite familiar. Similar, as in trademark Shehla Chatoor.
Yup…you read that right! The celebrated Pakistani designer had collaborated with the magazine and the Bollywood beauty for the recent photo shoot. The signature floral lehenga, ruffled details, ivory gowns and fitted choli adorned with heavy intricate embroidery scream Shehla Chatoor.
The stylist Sheroy A Chinoy seems to have done a remarkable job combining Sutaria’s heavy dresses with equally stunning jewellery. Keeping her hair and makeup minimal, he has let the dresses do the talking! A nude lip, kohl-rimmed eyes, highlighted cheekbones and natural curls complete the look.
“I am an old soul,” the actor tells the publication in the interview. “I get along fabulously with older people, love vintage jewellery and am big on hoarding trinkets that sing of the ‘80s and ‘90s. I adore pearls – they are wonderfully chic, minimalistic and make for a classic cut with blazers and dresses alike.”
Of course, Sutaria’s sense of style has evolved, from favouring simple solids to more experimental prints. “Never say never. I used to shun prints earlier but now, have a flurry darting through my wardrobe,” she shared.
A personal touch
This isn't the first time we have seen such cross over. Just a couple of years ago, there was another collaboration between a Pakistani designer and a Bollywood diva. Faraz Manan's most popular muse has been none other than Kareena Kapoor Khan. And while many remember her donning signature the couturier’s solids, Chatoor’s take on fashion is a bit more contemporary.
"I don't think it would be wrong to say that I like it when I'm picking my dresses from not a single but a handful of my collections," the ace designer told The Express Tribune. "I absolutely love separates - matching or even contrasting ones. Tara Sutaria's look was the latter. The separates worked for this particular shoot and these are heirloom pieces. I love the details on them!"
Chatoor went on to clarify that she didn't participate in the shoot itself since it happened in Mumbai. Out of the five looks for the magazine, Sutaria donned three by the Pakistani designer, the gorgeous ivory outfit with a floral skirt and full-sleeved choli stood out the most. Paired with a heirloom choker and traditional kangan, her bespoke look is immaculate.
“My mum always says, ‘Beauty is as beauty does’," Sutaria said. "While you are unique, you are never indispensable. I love and treasure the adulation that everyone showers me with. But I am aware that it could disappear tomorrow.”
On the contrary, we think Sutaria has arrived and is here to stay.
