A leading Ukrainian company, specialising in implementation of renewable energy projects and municipal solid waste (MSW) management, has expressed interest in developing and designing a landfill degassing project in Punjab.
In that regard, a delegation of the Ukrainian Clear Energy Group of Companies visited the Punjab Board of Investment and Trade (PBIT) to discuss the potential of renewable energy in Punjab.
PBIT Facilitation Director Dr Suhail Saleem received Clear Energy Group CEO Serhii Savchuk and International Business Manager Kotliarov Evgenii and briefed them on the potential of renewable energy available in Punjab.
He apprised the delegation of the working of PBIT, Lahore Waste Management Company and Punjab Power Development Board and the way these entities could help in the Ukrainian company’s plan to establish a plant in Punjab.
In his remarks, Savchuk pointed out that his company had expertise in the field of waste management and intended to design and develop first-of-its-kind landfill degassing project in Pakistan.
He said the waste collection in Lahore dominated the total waste collection in Punjab and the company was in the process of developing a business plan to submit an unsolicited bid.
PBIT agreed to provide one-window facilitation to the company in order to connect it with other relevant government departments. The Ukrainian delegation said cooperation in energy affairs between Pakistan and Ukraine would assist the former in modernising its energy sector to make it efficient, increase the share of renewables and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the long term.
It was highlighted that on average 60% of waste in Punjab was organic, which would be suitable for a biogas power plant and landfill degassing. It was also pointed out that Pakistan produced 30 million tons of waste per year, on average.
Punjab Power Development Board (PPDB) officials Dr Salman Haider and Amir joined the meeting through video link and spoke about the potential of waste-to-power energy projects in Punjab and the mode of investment suitable for the Ukrainian company.
Representatives of the Lahore Waste Management Company also attended the meeting.
