PESHAWAR:

The provincial assembly Deputy Speaker Mahmood Jan, his wife and son have contracted the novel coronavirus.

Sources at the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly Secretariat informed that the deputy speaker had developed the Covid-19 symptoms after which his swab samples were taken a day earlier and his test results came back positive on Saturday.

The deputy speaker and his family members have isolated themselves at their home and are taking all precautionary measures, the sources added.

In June this year, K-P Assembly Speaker Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani had also tested positive for the virus.

Over 20 lawmakers of the provincial assembly have so far contracted the coronavirus. Apart from the infected, at least one MPA, Jamshid Kakakhel, has died of the virus so far.

Meanwhile, K-P Health Department on Saturday in its daily coronavirus situation report said that at least 251 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the province with two virus related deaths in the past 24 hours in the province.

The report said a total of 1,305 people have died of Covid-19 since the pandemic hit the province while only two people have died of coronavirus since the beginning of the second wave of the pandemic.

It further said that as many as 168 patients of coronavirus have fully recovered.

Meanwhile, a student of Gomal University also contracted coronavirus, following the administration decided to shut the department for a few days.
