Zaheer Ahmed wins capital climbing contest

ACP organises national sport and rock climbing championship

Zaheer Ahmed won the rock and speed climbing competition in the federal capital on Wednesday.

The National Sport and Rock Climbing Championships 2020 had been organised by the Alpine Club of Pakistan in the Margalla Hills. The climbers from as far as Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) in the competition.

The climbers observed special standard operating procedures for the event, to prevent injury and the novel coronavirus from spreading.

In the open category of rock climbing competition - speed, Ahmed stood first, Sajid Aslam was second and Mushahid Shah was third.

In the junior category, Hassan Faiz was first, Hanzalla Zafar was second and Abdul Bari third. In the youth category, Abu Hurraira secured top spot, Umar Zafar was second and Abu Zar was third. Aman-e-Jannat was given a special award.

In the sport climbing competition-speed, Ahmed again bagged the top spot, Aslam was second and Shah was third in the open category.

Hanzala Zafar was first in the junior category, Hassan Ali was second and Abdul Bari third.

Abu Huraira first, Abu Zar second and Umar Bilal third in the youth category whereas Aman-e-Jannat was given a special award.

During the closing ceremony, ACP President Abu Zafar Sadiq appreciated the participants who came from different parts of the country despite concerns for Covid-19. He assured to provide the best climbing facilities to participants despite their limited resources and gear.

The participants were also briefed about the Clean-Green Pakistan Movement.

Earlier in the opening ceremony, ACP Secretary Karrar Haideri briefed the participants about the terms and conditions of the competition and the importance of such activities.

Later, after the competition, they cleaned the Saidpur Trek of the Margalla Hills.
