Army chief reaffirms support to Iran in matters of regional security

Gen Bajwa, Iranian FM also discuss Afghan peace process among other matters of mutual interest

ISLAMABAD:

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa reaffirmed Pakistan’s support towards Iran in matters of mutual interest and regional security on Wednesday.

During a meeting held with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at the army's General Headquarters, the army chief and the foreign minister discussed matters of mutual interest, including Afghan reconciliation process and Pakistan-Iran border management and border markets.

The army chief told the foreign minister that enhanced Pak-Iran cooperation will have a positive impact on regional peace and stability, as per a statement released by the Inter-Service Public Relations.

The Iranian diplomat appreciated Pakistan’s positive role for regional stability, especially the Afghan peace process, and pledged to keep working for better relations between the two brotherly countries.

 

Iran’s foreign minister arrived in Islamabad on a two-day official visit on Tuesday to discuss bilateral issues as well as key regional developments.

Zarif is accompanied by a high-powered delegation, comprising senior political and economic officials.

Zarif’s visit to Pakistan forms part of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries. This is his fourth visit to Pakistan during the last two and a half years.

The visit of the Iranian foreign minister comes at an important juncture particularly against the backdrop of a host of developments.
