Labour and trade unions have called for an investigation into allegations of financial irregularities against Karachi Port Trust (KPT) officials.

In a statement issued on Sunday, KPT’s elected trade union and other unions asked Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Ali Zaidi to investigate corruption allegedly committed by the KPT legal affairs manager and former human resources manager.

According to the statement, they were involved in financial irregularities and fake appointments. It also claims that they sent wielded political influence with the board of trustees, rendering the KPT chairperson helpless.

The statement further alleged that trillions of rupees were paid in salaries and allowances to officers whose appointment and deputation was not approved by the relevant ministry.
