Islamabad High Court has rejected the request for an inquiry under the Anti-Money Laundering Act against model Ayyan Ali in the currency smuggling case, reported Express News.
The court had received a petition by the customs officials against an earlier verdict passed by the Customs Special Court in Ali’s case. However, the High Court upheld the decision of the Customs Special Court and rejected the appeal of the customs officials. Justice Ghulam Azam Qambrani delivered the reserved verdict.
The appeal against the decision of the Customs Special Court had been pending since March 31, 2016.
It is pertinent to mention here that Ali was proclaimed an offender after being arrested on March 14, 2015. She attempted to smuggle $506,800 in cash to the UAE, past the Airports Security Force personnel at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Islamabad.
However, she was allowed bail and has been absconding ever since. The model did not even post anything on her social media until earlier this year. Ali missed 45 court hearings, after which the court issued her arrest warrant and declared her “most wanted,” ordering her property to be confiscated.
Ali’s lawyer had sought time for her to surrender but Judge Arshad Hussain Bhutta had turned down his request.
Nevertheless, coincidentally or not-so-coincidentally, the former model dramatically reappeared on February 29, 2020, on Twitter. Following this, she released her debut album titled Nothing Like Everything on August 3, 2020. The album contains 11 tracks that apparently took her half a decade to make.
