Covid-19 deaths surge in Sindh

556 new infections reported in the province, with 416 in Karachi alone

With worries about a looming second wave of the pandemic, Sindh saw a spike in coronavirus-related deaths on Thursday, as 17 more patients succumbed to the disease. As many as 2,664 people have died of Covid-19 in the province to date.

Furthermore, according to a statement issued by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, 556 new infections were detected in the province after 11,530 samples were tested, taking the province's virus tally to 148,343.

It is pertinent to note that such high numbers of deaths and infections in a single day have not been reported in Sindh since the end of July.

The CM stated that there were currently 5,813 patients found to be infected by Covid-19, of whom 5,534 were in home isolation, 275 were being treated at different hospitals and four were quarantined at isolation centres. He added that 201 patients were in critical condition, with 30 on ventilators.

On the other hand, 233 people regained health from the contagion overnight, he said, adding that the number of recoveries had risen to 139,866.

Of the newly reported cases, 416 were reported in the provincial capital alone. Meanwhile, Hyderabad saw 20 new cases, Qambar-Shahdadkot and Shaheed Benazirabad 12 each, Jamshoro 11, Tando Mohammad Khan and Thatta eight each, Sanghar seven, Mirpurkhas six, Sukkur, Tando Allahyar and Umerkot five each, Badin four, Ghotki and Shikarpur three each, Dadu, Jacobabad and Khairpur two each, and Larkana, Matiari, Naushero Feroze and Sujawal one apiece.
