KARACHI:

Pakistan suffered a major setback at the Asian Confederation Boxing Championship when Mohammad Waseem crashed out against Rey Saludar.

Waseem’s aim to avenge his loss at the China Open of Boxing against the same opponent failed to see the light of the day as the Philippines’ star overcame him again.

According to the details provided by the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF), Saludar won the bout 27-21 to confirm his place in the semi-finals of the flyweight (52) category. Following Waseem’s loss, Pakistan’s hopes now rest on Amir Khan and Yasir Javed who fight their quarter-finals today.

Amir will meet India’s Balvinder Baniwal in the 64-kg event while Yasir will face Iran’s Mohammad Nouritour in the 91-kg event.

Pakistan entered the event with seven pugilists with three of its boxers – Nisar Khan, Usman Butt and Arshad Hussain – bowing out of the competition earlier.
