The metropolis should be given the status of a major export hub in Pakistan, stated Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman on Monday, pointing out that the port city's industries paid massive amounts of money in the form of taxes.

Visiting representatives of the Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industry and North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry, Rehman said that despite this, roads in Karachi's industrial areas were left dilapidated after the recent torrential rains while their infrastructure was crumbling.

He pointed out that the city's industries consistently suffered from gas and power shortages as well as an inadequate water supply, insisting that an authoritative local government must be established to resolve these issues.

"Karachi should be given the status of a mega metropolitan city and a proper census should be carried out to better enable the appropriate, equitable distribution of resources and development work," he claimed. Further, the JI leader called for the abolition of the quota system and its replacement with a system based on merit, also demanding the immediate resolution of the city's transport, health and sewerage woes.

He was visiting the trade associations in relation to an ongoing public referendum launched by the JI.
