Kartarpur Corridor reopened after ‘improvement in Covid situation’

The federal government announced to reopen the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for the Sikh pilgrims worldwide, including Indians after “improvement in coronavirus situation” across the country with immediate effect.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs on Friday, Sikh pilgrims from India could visit the Gurdwara from dawn to dusk as per the 2019 agreement signed between Pakistan and the neighbouring country. They have been requested to comply with the coronavirus pandemic precautionary measures.

Local visitors were also allowed to visit the religious site following the Covid-19 standard operating operations (SOPs) issued by the federal government.

The first Guru of Sikhism, Baba Guru Nanak Sahib, had spent the last 18 years of his life in Kartarpur, a town located in Punjab province's Narowal district.

Pakistan had suspended visit of pilgrims to the religious site in March following the spread of the coronavirus pandemic across the country.

In June, the federal government briefly opened the corridor to commemorate the death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh but India refused to open the corridor of its side.
