PM Imran, others wish Trump, Melania speedy recovery

Trump and Melania are entering quarantine just a month before the November 3 presidential election

NEWS DESK October 02, 2020

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday wished for a speedy recovery for United States President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump after they announced to have contracted the coronavirus.

President Donald Trump, in a tweet, on Friday said that he and his wife Melania had contracted Covid-19 and were entering quarantine, just a month before the November 3 presidential election.

Trump's tweet revealing that America's first couple had tested positive reverberated through world media and financial markets. Here are some of the reactions:

US Vice President Mike Pence tweeted that "We join millions across America praying for their full and swift recovery. God bless you President Trump & our wonderful First Lady Melania."

Trump, 74, is at high risk for the deadly virus both because of his age and because he is considered overweight. He has remained in good health during his time in office but is not known to exercise regularly or to follow a healthy diet.

Trump played down the virus in its early stages and has repeatedly predicted it would go away.

More than 200,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the United States alone, with the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions especially hard hit.

The president rarely wears a mask and has ridiculed others, including Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, for doing so regularly. Health professionals say that face coverings are key to preventing the spread of the virus.

The British government wished Trump a speedy recovery.

"All of us want to send our best wishes to President Trump, the first lady and the Trump family and wish them a speedy recovery," Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick told Sky.

"We know what it's like to have, in our case a prime minister who tested positive for COVID and setting aside politics we all want to see him and his wife get better soon," he said,

The spokesperson for the French Government, Gabrial Attal, said that “This demonstrates that the virus spares no one, including those who have shown scepticism. I wish him a swift recovery.”

Taiwan President, Tsai Ing-wen, also released her statement wishing a full recovery for the Trump and Melania.
