Last year, Bollywood star Anushka Sharma hit back at trolls after she was ridiculed for husband and Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli's ill performance. However, seems like the debate has been rife once again after batting legend Sunil Gavaskar made a ‘distasteful’ comment about the same. The comment from the former India captain came during Thursday’s clash of IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab.
Gavaskar made the personal comments after Kohli endured a tough day on the field. The RCB captain dropped his KXIP counterpart KL Rahul twice while he was batting on 83 and 89. Kohli’s miseries were further compounded by his poor batting. Soon after Kohli failed to deliver with the bat, Gavaskar came up with a surprising comment for the Indian captain. The former cricketer-turned-commentator took a dig at Kohli and said that he only trained against his wife's bowling during the lockdown.
“Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hai (seems like he has only practised on Anuhska's bowling),” said the celebrated cricketer.
The batting legend might be referring to the viral video that surfaced during the lockdown in which Virat Kohli was seen playing cricket with his wife. But the fans were not at all impressed with his comments and slammed him for the same with some even calling his words ‘sexist’.
Hours after Gavaskar made the comments on-air, Sharma took to Instagram to express her displeasure over the same. She put a strongly-worded statement on her Instagram story as she asked him to explain why did he accuse her for Kohli’s failure.
Taking a dig at Gavaskar, she also made it clear that she is fed of being dragged into cricket whenever her husband fails to perform.
“That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her of her husband’s game? I’m sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commentating on the game,” wrote the Sultan actor.
“Don’t you think you should have an equal amount of respect for me and us? I’m sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or are your words only relevant if you use my name in the process
“It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements?
“Respected Mr. Gavaskar, you are a legend whose name stands tall in this gentleman’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this,” she concluded.
