SBBWU students remember former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt

Granddaughter, great granddaughter Anne and Tracy Roosevelt virtually interact with students

PESHAWAR:

A day after the International Day of Peace observances, the granddaughter and great granddaughter of former US president Franklin D Roosevelt held an interactive virtual chat with the students of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women's University (SBBWU) in Peshawar.

Anne Roosevelt and Tracy Roosevelt spoke to students who had gathered in the Eleanor Roosevelt Corner Peshawar (ERCP) at the varsity. The ERCP has been named after one of the most influential First Ladies in the US history.

Outgoing US Consulate General, Peshawar, Sebron 'CB' Toney, his newly arrived successor Greg Macris and Public Affairs Officer Kahina Robinson also participated in the virtual conference.

The university's vice-chancellor, Dr Razia Sultana, while addressing the event, spoke about SBBWU being the only public sector women's university in Peshawar and its partnership with the ERCP.

"It is a matter of privilege to be hosting an event to shed light on the life of the First Lady who advocated for the role of women in the workplace and played an instrumental role in the protection of human rights,” she said.

The consul general welcomed Anne and Tracy Roosevelt and said former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt was a well-known advocate of human rights, including civil rights, women's equality and democracy.

He also spoke about the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and called on the SBBWU students to follow in her footsteps.

Anne and Tracy Roosevelt spoke about the legacy of the former president and the first lady and what they were doing to preserve it, adding that Eleanor Roosevelt became one of the most highly-regarded and well-respected First Ladies in the world.

Since its inauguration, the ERCP claims to have helped tens of thousands of young women every year from across the province to take advantage of print, online and multimedia resources, and to connect with US experts.

The Roosevelt family continues to help increase positive outcomes in areas such as education, law, business, health and democracy across the globe.

Earlier this year, Consul General CB Toney visited the ERCP to celebrate its fourth anniversary.
