Kareena Kapoor Khan has long been Bollywood’s favourite diva since she stepped into the industry two decades back. In these years, Bebo, as she likes to be called, has managed to become an icon of her own.
Bebo, who celebrated her 40th birthday on September 21, has given perhaps some of the most well-known characters of the last two decades to us, be it Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’s Poo or Jab We Met’s Geet. And while she’s known to be a tough cookie to crack in interviews sometimes, she has also given some of the best anecdotes during them!
On the occasion of Kareena completing four decades in the world, here are four times she gave us life during interviews, as compiled from Pinkvilla.
Nepotism
In a conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt, Kareena, one of the biggest ‘star kid’ successes, shared how people don’t understand the situation. “21 years of working would not have happened with just nepotism. It is not possible,” she said, emphasising that it is really just hard work that keeps you going.
She went on to add a self-aware take on it, saying, “It might sound weird but my struggle is there. There is a struggle but it probably is not as interesting as somebody who comes on a train with just Rs 10 in his pocket. Yeah, it’s not been that and I can’t be apologetic about it.”
Breaking up with Shahid Kapoor
While she dated Shahid more than a decade back, Bebo did not spare a breath before spilling the beans on his role in her success after Jab We Met, while talking to Anupama Chopra!
“It was Shahid who actually said that I should hear this script of this film. He was like, ‘It’s amazing, the girl’s part is amazing and you should do it’,” she recalled.
“Of course, then destiny had its own plan and life took its own course. A lot happened in the making of this film and Tashan and our lives... We all kind of went our separate ways. And this beauty of a movie came out of it,” added Bebo.
Dealing with failure
Kareena’s high hopes from Tashan were shattered when the film bombed at the box office. Looking back at her life’s trajectory during Jab We Met and Tashan, the diva likened it to Geet from the former.
“It was tough on me professionally and personally. Because if you got to see how her life took a turn in the second half of the film, a lot of my life took a turn as well during the making of the film,” she said in an interview to Film Companion.
She revealed that seeing the outcome of the two films – Jab We Met’s roaring success and Tashan tanking – she became depressed for almost half a year.
How Saif Ali Khan changed her
Speaking to BBC Asian Network, Kareena said, “The best thing I’ve learned from Saif is being comfortable with myself and not always be running after money, success, fame. He’s taught me to love the greater things in life, that there’s something greater than money, fame, and success.”
