KARACHI:

The construction of 34 dams of varying sizes is underway in Nagarparkar, while 18 small dams have already been built there, said Sindh government spokesperson Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Saturday.

Speaking to the media, Wahab claimed the provincial government had completed the construction of 60 dams, of different sizes, across the province.

These dams will be used for storing rainwater, which can then be used for crop cultivation, he said, giving the example of the Kalidas dam in Nagarparkar.

Water from this dam is being used to cultivate chillies over an area of an acre and the region is no longer barren, Wahab said.

Speaking of 18 small dams in the area, he said all of them were now filled with rainwater and would ensure the availability of water to Tharparkar.

"The construction of small dams in Tharparkar was envisioned by former president and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari who, besides promising their establishment, had pledged to install reverse osmosis plants in Thar, so that the desert area can be provided clean water," he stated.

Wahab assured that the Sindh government would continue to work for people's welfare, as the PPP believed in public service.

Separately, he also shared a video of dams filled with water in Nagarparkar on Twitter.
