KU introduces hybrid model of examination after students protest
Hybrid model includes physical examinations, as well as assignment, evaluation marks
KARACHI:
A day after students at the University of Karachi (KU) protested the administration's decision to conduct semester examinations from September 21, varsity vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi on Wednesday introduced a hybrid model, including physical examinations as well as the scores of assignments and evaluations conducted during online classes.
The administration, for the first time, approved the introduction of the hybrid model of examinations. The VC said examinations would be held consisting of material from in-person classes that were held from January 1 to February 28. In addition, the assignments and evaluation marks of online classes that took place due to the lockdown will be added to the total.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Dean's Committee chaired by Dr Iraqi.
The VC explained that the deans of the education, art, management sciences and law departments said their respective faculties had completed the curriculum through online classes.
For students’ convenience, it has been decided that the teachers will prepare examinations based on material taught in physical classes, while adding the remaining marks of online assignments and evaluations.
According to the VC, a notification in this regard will be issued shortly.
A day earlier, scores of KU students protested against the administration's decision to conduct semester examinations from September 21, demanding to be passed on the basis of assignments submitted during online classes.
On the first day back after a six-month break due to the novel coronavirus, students gathered outside the varsity's administration block, expressing dissatisfaction with the quality of online teaching.
The students were of the opinion that there was no 'teaching' in the online classes; instead, they argued, the teachers only asked students to submit assignments. On what basis was the varsity then conducting these examinations, the students demanded to know.
They further demanded to be promoted to the next semester on the basis of the assignments submitted.
Yes only assignment base
Students should be promoted to next semester
If they don't want exam, then what about private students who gave examination every year as they don't have strong financial position to be a regular student. They can easily say that as they cannot be part of regular classes so they want to/should be promoted or otherwise they will block the road like the bunch of lazy regular students.
I am agree with the decision of students .. they should have to promote the students on the basis of assignments and assessments that the teachers had taken during lockdown situation .. it is also very good and suitable idea that they can also take physical exams those they have taught from January to Feb ..Thank you
This is such a suitable step for our(students) feasibility. I appreciate Vice Chancellor's decision.
Yes the online classes were not appropriate and most of the course incharge have appeared in the last week and has given the video of the lectures in which we can not properly understand the topics. As there was 6 months break so we need to revise the courses we studied before the pandemic, instead teachers are giving their online videos even a week before the papers. And most of the teacher have not given any assignments for the distribution of numbers so that we can pass exams. We request to distribute the numbers between assignment and exams in a way we can pass our exams easily.
Only 2 courses were conducted in online classes! And now before a week we got PPTs and pdfs from the teacher to cover our all course ! How is it possible to study professional subjects by our own as a science students? What should they ask in our exams?
