KARACHI:

A day after students at the University of Karachi (KU) protested the administration's decision to conduct semester examinations from September 21, varsity vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi on Wednesday introduced a hybrid model, including physical examinations as well as the scores of assignments and evaluations conducted during online classes.

The administration, for the first time, approved the introduction of the hybrid model of examinations. The VC said examinations would be held consisting of material from in-person classes that were held from January 1 to February 28. In addition, the assignments and evaluation marks of online classes that took place due to the lockdown will be added to the total.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Dean's Committee chaired by Dr Iraqi.

The VC explained that the deans of the education, art, management sciences and law departments said their respective faculties had completed the curriculum through online classes.

For students’ convenience, it has been decided that the teachers will prepare examinations based on material taught in physical classes, while adding the remaining marks of online assignments and evaluations.

According to the VC, a notification in this regard will be issued shortly.

A day earlier, scores of KU students protested against the administration's decision to conduct semester examinations from September 21, demanding to be passed on the basis of assignments submitted during online classes.

On the first day back after a six-month break due to the novel coronavirus, students gathered outside the varsity's administration block, expressing dissatisfaction with the quality of online teaching.

The students were of the opinion that there was no 'teaching' in the online classes; instead, they argued, the teachers only asked students to submit assignments. On what basis was the varsity then conducting these examinations, the students demanded to know.

They further demanded to be promoted to the next semester on the basis of the assignments submitted.
