KARACHI:

A local court sentenced on Wednesday a man, Faqeer Muhammad, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of murdering Umair Shahab, the son of a former DIG.

Announcing the verdict, the court also levied a penalty of Rs100,000 on Muhammad.

According to police, Muhammad had shot Shahab during a robbery in 2017.

Doctor suicide case

At another hearing, the South judicial magistrate issued a show-cause notice to the investigation officer (IO) in a female doctor's suicide case over his absence from the hearing.

The IO was supposed to submit the investigation report at the hearing, but failed to appear before the court, much to its annoyance.

Consequently, issuing a show-cause notice to him, the court sought the investigation report as well as his reply on the notice at the next hearing.

The doctor had died of suicide on August 18, following which her father alleged she had shot herself after she had been drugged and raped.

Remanded

The South judicial magistrate also handed over a man and his friend, accused of killing the former's wife, to the police on a four-day physical remand.

During the hearing at Karachi City Court, the investigation officer informed the court that Shamshad, along with his friend Saad, killed his wife Areeba and tried to portray the murder as suicide.

"However, evidence collected from the crime scene proved otherwise," the IO said, moving the court to grant a 14-day physical remand of the accused for interrogation.

The court, however, granted a four-day remand of the accused, who were presented before it by the Baloch Colony police.

Murder case

Separately, the East judicial magistrate handed over three persons accused of killing a man in Zaman Town to police on remand.

Among the accused, Areeba has been sent on a judicial remand and Shahrukh and Noman on a one-day physical remand.

They were presented before the court by the IO, who moved the court to grant their remand.

The accused had allegedly shot dead Munib, who had recently gotten married, within the limits of the Zaman Town police on September 2. CCTV footage of the incident, circulating on social media, showed two motorcyclists snatch his cellphone, gun him down and then escape.

According to the police, his ex-girlfriend Areeba and her accomplices, Noman and Shahrukh, were behind the murder. Areeba reportedly called the deceased near her residence, where Shahrukh shot him and escaped on a motorcycle driven by Noman.
