The provincial government has reportedly prepared a proposal worth Rs410 million for relief and rehabilitation work in the flood-hit areas of Chitral.
A summary in this regard has been sent to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan for approval, claimed Special Assistant to K-P chief minister on Minority Affairs Wazir Zada in a statement on Sunday.
Wazir, who hails from Chitral - which was hit by flash floods after a glacial lake burst, said that a draft proposal for conducting the rehabilitation work in both Upper and Lower Chitral districts had been prepared after taking input from the local authorities.
Details of the summary showed that irrigation schemes for Reshun Gol worth Rs80.5 million, construction of protection walls along the Mastuj River in Reshun, Rs10.6 million for a project in Yarhunlasht, Rs30.05 million for the Green Lasht project, a Rover Kuragh project worth Rs30.5 million, Kuragh and Dag Gol worth Rs10 million have been included in the proposed rehabilitation plan.
These projects also included Rs10 million for Bref Gol, Rs10 million for Chakin Gol, Rs10 million for Jam Lasht, Rs10 million for Churan Gol, Rs10 million for Doag Tak, and Rs40 million for Torkho and Boni Gol protection walls.
The project will also rehabilitate 11 irrigation channels of Reshun at an estimated cost of Rs20 million, Moreover, 18 civil irrigation channels worth Rs6 million, seven Korugh irrigation channel worth Rs10 million, Churan three irrigation channel worth Rs3 million, three water channels in Yarkhun worth 3 million will also be restored, the special assistant said.
The upper and lower parts of Chitral have suffered tremendous damage by the floods due to either heavy rains or glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) several times over the past two months. Several bridges, link roads, hospitals, mosques, standing crops, cattle, and houses have been washed away in the floods.
Last week, K-P Chief Minister Mahmood Khan had visited the flood-hit areas of Chitral and was briefed on the damages caused.
The chief minister had promised that the provincial government will not abandon the people of Chitral in this difficult hour, and announced that soon he will visit the rea again to announce a specific relief package for the calamity-hit region.
