Following almost six months of shuttered cinema halls amid the ongoing pandemic, the local cinema industry is finally ready to welcome the citizens of Pakistan.

Despite the absence of cinema owners, film exhibitors and distributors have taken it upon themselves to raise the curtains with two Hollywood films.

Film producers, cinema owners and distributors are expecting a warm response from the public after the long-lasting lockdown which delayed the release of surplus local films as well. Stakeholders, on the other hand, are hoping the opening films will provide some sort of relief after the overbearing financial losses.

HKC entertainment is the distributor for the slated films and although the release of both Mulan and Tenet was denied initially, insider sources have revealed that the current decision was taken following the financial crunch.

"No one can take any further risk given the current circumstances and this is the reason many have refused to purchase films as well. But we are hoping the success of these two films motivates the distributors to initiate their business again and allows local producers to pull up their socks,” an official from the distribution club told The Express Tribune.

He further added that although it should be self-explanatory, all SOPs will be maintained within and outside cinema halls. “Cinema owners and employees have been asked to follow all regulations and there will be minimum seats available in each cinema hall with a maximum distance between the viewers,” he confirmed.

The official went on to point out that although the fear of Covid-19 is still widely prevalent, the ticket sales for Mulan and Tenet will decide the fate for films to come.

It is pertinent to mention here that the closure of local cinemas in the mid of March postponed the release and production of several local films, including The Legend of Maula Jatt.

The Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan starrer was slated for an Eid release, along with Urwa Hocane’s production debut, Tich Button.

Other halted releases included Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza’s Quaid e Azam Zindabad and Fatman, Adnan Siddiqui’s Dum Mastam, Faisal Qureshi’s Money Back Guarantee, and shooting of Wajahat Rauf’s Parde Mein Rehne Do.

In an earlier conversation with The Express Tribune, Distributor Nadeem Mandviwala explained how cinemas were already in the dumps after the government banned screening of Bollywood films last year. “There was a lack of production of local films to begin with. But even the ones that did manage to release before the pandemic, failed to perform well,” he said.

Mandviwala had also complained about the lack of government interest in maintaining the cinema houses amid the lockdown. He further added that even if the permission to screen films again is granted following the crisis, the owners will remain at a loss after accommodating the audience in line with the SOPs.
