Yasir Javed became the third Pakistan boxer to advance at the Asian Confederation Boxing Championship as he beat Kyrgyzstan’s Kavenemil Atyshe in his first bout of the 91-kilogramme (kg) category at Incheon, South Korea.
After Amir Khan and Mohammad Waseem won in their respective categories, it was Javed who carried Pakistan forward at the tournament.
The battle, which was decided on points, saw Javed taking control of his opponent with sharp reflexes. After adopting a defensive strategy in the first round, Javed played the next two rounds with aggression to overwhelm his opponent to win the bout 21-12.
Meanwhile, Waseem would be the only Pakistan boxer to be seen in action today. Waseem defeated Turkmenistan’s Jurnayev Zarip in his 52kg first-round battle. Two out of seven Pakistan boxers – Arshad Hussain and Usman Butt – have already bowed out of the event.
