LAHORE:

The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has resumed development work on the Kachhi Canal project phase-I, which will enable Balochistan to irrigate an additional 30,000 acres of land in Dera Bugti district, said Wapda Chairman Muzammil Hussain.

Speaking during his visit to Kachhi Canal on Wednesday, he considered the development important for agriculture and poverty alleviation in remote areas of Balochistan.

Hussain added that the process of carrying out feasibility studies on Kachhi Canal phase-II and phase-III had also begun.

The chairman highlighted that a 40km-long main lined canal and a 32km-long water distribution system would be constructed in three years under the remaining development work on phase-I of the project.

He pointed out that Wapda had completed construction work on the 363km-long main canal and allied water distribution system in August 2017 for irrigating 72,000 acres of land.

Terming cultivation over 52,000 acres of land out of a total of 72,000 acres a positive omen, he said it would bring about a phenomenal change in the livelihood of residents of Dera Bugti district.

He voiced hope that the provincial government would complete the remaining work on 20,000 acres in the command area soon. Speaking on the occasion, Wapda General Manager (Central) Attaullah Memon briefed the chairman about the status of remaining development work under phase-I and the feasibility studies for phase-II and phase-III.
