PESHWAR:

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday inaugurated the much-awaited Peshwar BRT system.

Speaking at the ceremony, the premier congratulated the provincial chief minister and his team for completing the project.

“BRT will provide massive relief to the common people, who will be able to afford quality service within fewer charges,” he said, adding that the new transit system will also help reduce traffic in the city.

A project that has been under construction for three years, and has experienced many delays, is the last flagship project launched by the previous Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

The BRT service will commence from the Chamkani station during the opening project.

According to Radio Pakistan, BRT has been built at a cost of around Rs70 billion, and will provide service to approximately 340,000 people every day.

The BRT is a 27.5 kilometre-long main corridor track with 31 stations, besides seven feeder routes of total 62 kilometres, with 146 stops to facilitate hundreds of thousands of passengers every day.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Governors of Sindh and Khyber-Pakthunkhwa, federal and provincial ministers, advisers and special assistants, and other senior government officials.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan also inaugurated the ‘Ehsas Nashonuma’ programme in Bara area of district Khyber.

Ehsaas Nashonuma is the first anti-stunting programme in the country's history. The budget of this year's programme is Rs8.52 billion.

Under this programme, deserving families will be provided with nutritious food along with a quarterly stipend - Rs2,000 for girls and Rs1,500 for boys.

In the first phase, 33 Nashonuma centres will be established in nine districts of the country; all the centres will be established by the end of this month.
