FM Qureshi takes up IIOJK with Mike Pompeo

In their telephonic conversation, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations, developments in the region

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday raised the issue of massive violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

In their telephonic conversation, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations, and developments in the region with a view to promoting peace, prosperity and stability.

Qureshi expressed his gratitude to Pompeo for the US’ participation in the debate in the UN Security Council on August 5 on the occasion of the first anniversary of India illegally revoking the special status of IIOJK and placing it under a military siege.

The minister said the UNSC’s deliberations had once again reaffirmed the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir.

He added that the continued interest and commitment of the international community would help generate the necessary momentum towards the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people and the relevant UNSC resolutions.

On the recent developments in Afghanistan, Qureshi reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to supporting all efforts for an inclusive and comprehensive political settlement.

He stressed the need for continuing to pursue the Afghan peace process. Referring to the holding of a Loya Jirga in Kabul, he expressed the hope that a conducive environment would be created for the earliest convening of intra-Afghan negotiations.

Stressing the importance of the Pakistan-US relationship, the minister the leaderships of both countries were committed to further strengthen ties. He added that Pakistan would be a partner for peace with the US.

Exchanging notes on the Covid-19 pandemic, Qureshi thanked Pompeo for the US’ support and assistance to the country. He also shared the encouraging results following the ‘smart lockdown’ policy in Pakistan that helped the government in gradually reopening the economy.
